Louisiana Ammonia Plant Set for 2029 Launch, Boosting US Fertilizer Independence
A new ammonia production plant in Louisiana is set to increase US fertilizer independence. The $3.7 billion Blue Point One project, a joint venture between CF Industries, Japan's JERA, and Mitsui, will produce 1.4 million metric tons of ammonia annually when it begins operation in 2029.
The facility is located along the Mississippi River, which serves as a critical gateway for fertilizer moving into the interior United States. The Gulf Coast-to-Corn Belt supply chain is already heavily reliant on imports and infrastructure that moves fertilizer north through pipelines, barges, railroads, and trucks.
US Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins said the groundbreaking ceremony marked another major step toward greater fertilizer independence. Deputy Agriculture Secretary Stephen Vaden emphasized that construction has finally begun after years of promises, stating 'That skepticism's time has ended because action is now being taken.'
