LTFRB Considers Expanding Fuel Discounts for PUVs Amid Middle East Tensions
The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) is considering expanding fuel discounts for public utility vehicles (PUVs) amid rising oil prices driven by the Middle East situation. The agency said it is reviewing pending fare hike petitions and discussing proposals with government agencies and transport stakeholders.
The LTFRB currently offers a P10-per-liter fuel discount to passenger jeepneys and UV Express units, benefiting over 87,000 vehicles. However, expanding this program would require a larger government budget, according to LTFRB Chairman Vigor Mendoza II.
Mendoza stated that the proposal is being considered as an alternative to fare hikes, which could burden commuters with higher costs. The agency is weighing measures to cushion the impact of volatile global oil prices and is expected to expedite discussions on pending petitions following Transportation Secretary Giovanni 'Banoy' Lopez's directive.
