Macedonia Links Up with Southern Gas Corridor

North Macedonia's accession to the Vertical Gas Corridor is set to open new supply routes for the country, including access to the Southern Gas Corridor. The corridor connects Greece with Bulgaria, Romania, Moldova, Ukraine, Slovakia, and Hungary, but North Macedonia's entry expands its reach into the Western Balkans.

The country's energy minister, Sanja Bozhinovska, stated that by connecting to Greece's gas system, North Macedonia will gain access to a wider range of alternative natural gas sources. This includes supply routes through LNG terminals in Revithoussa and Alexandroupolis. The key project for North Macedonia is the 68 km gas interconnector with Greece, which is currently under construction and expected to be commissioned in 2027.

The expansion of the Vertical Gas Corridor also creates opportunities for Azerbaijan's natural gas exports to reach Western Balkan markets through infrastructure linked to the Southern Gas Corridor. North Macedonia aims to secure natural gas supplies from Azerbaijan, with a capacity of 2 gigawatts of renewable energy and plans to balance electricity generation through Azerbaijani gas supplies.
