Mahanagar Gas Ltd (MGL) has increased the price of compressed natural gas (CNG) by Rs 2 per kg in Mumbai and other operating areas, citing higher spot liquefied natural gas (LNG) costs.

The revised CNG price in and around Mumbai will be Rs 88 per kg, according to a statement from MGL. This hike follows Indraprastha Gas Ltd (IGL) raising the CNG price in Delhi by Rs 3.89 per kg to Rs 86.98 per kg.

MGL attributed the increase to the ongoing crisis in the Middle East, which has led to higher international-index-linked gas prices and increased input costs for the company. To partially offset these costs, MGL has also raised the price of domestic piped natural gas (PNG) by Rs 1 per standard cubic metre.

The demand for CNG remains strong in Mumbai, with a significant portion of gas required for the CNG segment sourced through imported spot re-gasified liquefied natural gas (RLNG). MGL operates city gas distribution networks across multiple regions and supplies CNG to over 1.3 million vehicles through its network of over 500 stations.
