Maine Gas Prices Soar Ahead of Labor Day
Gas prices in Maine have surged ahead of the Labor Day weekend, with drivers potentially facing record highs. According to AAA, the average price for a gallon of regular gas in Maine on Thursday was $4.16, up three cents from the day before and four cents in the last week.
This marks a significant increase from last year's prices, which averaged $3.12 per gallon on the same date in 2022. Diesel prices have also skyrocketed, with an average of $5.81 per gallon in Maine, up 13 cents from the previous day.
The national average for regular gas has never been above $4 per gallon on Labor Day, and AAA warns that this year's prices may shatter records. The current record is $3.82, set on September 3, 2012.
The high cost of crude oil due to continued volatility in the Strait of Hormuz is largely to blame for the surge in gas prices. As a result, drivers can expect to pay nearly 40% more for gas compared to six months ago, when the Iran War began.
