Malaysia Exceeds Growth Estimates with 6% GDP Surge
Malaysia's economy is expected to grow above 5% this year, surpassing the central bank's estimate of 4-5%. The country's GDP expanded by 6% in Q2, exceeding the advanced estimate of 5.8%, driven by strong external demand for electrical and electronics (E&E) products and liquefied natural gas (LNG).
According to Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid, the country's economic growth is robust due to external demand, but domestic consumption remains cautious. Private investment moderated in Q2, while private consumption grew at a slower pace.
Economists expect strong export demand to be sustained, which could further boost the economy. However, there are concerns about private consumption and investment regaining momentum. The key test for Malaysia's growth prospects will be whether it can maintain its strong external demand while addressing domestic economic challenges.
