Malaysia's Economic Growth Leaves Many Feeling Insecure

Malaysia's economy grew at an impressive 6% year-on-year in the second quarter of 2026, making it one of the fastest-growing economies in the region.

This rapid growth was largely driven by net exports, which surged 168.5% to RM15.8 billion during the quarter and accounted for almost 40% of the 6% increase in GDP.

However, a closer look at the data reveals that much of this growth was concentrated in a few areas of the economy, including electrical and electronics exports and liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports.

The latter saw a 19.3% year-on-year growth due to global energy supply disruptions caused by the US-Iran war.
