Markets Plummet Amid Rising Crude Oil Prices and Geopolitical Tensions
Global markets experienced a downturn in early trade on August 19, 2026, due to rising crude oil prices and ongoing geopolitical tensions. The expiry of the temporary U.S.-Iran ceasefire has renewed concerns about energy supply disruptions, driving up Brent crude prices by 0.67% to $91.63 per barrel.
V.K. Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Investments Limited, attributed the ongoing market weakness to two factors: rising crude prices and appreciating bond yields globally. Crude prices have been affected by news from the Middle East for months, with total uncertainty about the conflict's outcome.
The 30-share BSE Sensex declined by 166.19 points to 77,070.93 in early trade, while the 50-share NSE Nifty dropped 59 points to 24,096.75. Among the major laggards were Tata Steel, Larsen & Toubro, and Bharat Electronics.
