Marubeni Surpasses Market Estimates with 20.7% Net Profit Rise
Marubeni Corporation reported its consolidated results for the first quarter of fiscal year ending March 2027, showing a significant increase in net profit. The company's quarterly profit attributable to owners of the parent rose 20.7% year-on-year to ¥186.43 billion, exceeding market consensus estimates.
The strong performance was driven by growth in resource-related businesses, including energy and chemicals, and metals. Higher commodity prices for copper, metallurgical coal, and other commodities boosted earnings. The company also benefited from a weaker yen and gains from equity-method investments.
In addition to the increased net profit, Marubeni's revenue rose 20.6% year-on-year to ¥2.609 trillion, while operating profit surged 54.7% to ¥132.13 billion. Profit before tax rose 26.1% to ¥228.80 billion.
The company has decided to implement a share buyback program of up to ¥100 billion, signaling its commitment to strengthening shareholder returns. CFO Tomoshi Tajima expressed the view that copper prices will remain firm over the medium to long term, supported by demand from AI and semiconductor sectors.
