Massachusetts Fuel Prices Reach New Highs Amid Global Market Pressure

Fuel prices in Massachusetts are on the rise, with residents facing higher costs for gas and heating oil. The average price of regular gas nationwide is $4.22 per gallon, while in Massachusetts it's about two cents higher. Andre Clarke, a Randolph resident, is considering changing his commute due to rising gas prices.

Industry experts warn that even if global conflicts end soon, prices would still remain elevated for some time. Mark Schieldrop from AAA explained that countries around the world have drawn down strategic reserves, leaving little buffer and tight inventories, which puts pressure on prices.

Heating oil prices are also increasing, with the state's most recent data showing an average price of $5.07 per gallon, up over 45% from last winter's average. Scott MacFarlane, who has run a family business for 57 years, said most local companies try to absorb small price hikes from suppliers but emphasized that this is a global issue beyond anyone's control.

MacFarlane expressed hope for some relief later in the year, predicting that prices will come down towards the end of November or beginning of December. However, he cautioned that they won't come tumbling down immediately.
