Massive Oil Spills Threaten Marine Ecosystems Off Iran and Oman Coasts
A massive oil spill has occurred off the coasts of Iran and Oman, threatening sensitive ecosystems and marine life in the region. Satellite observations have revealed that two separate pollution events are unfolding, with one covering approximately 300 km² near the Hallaniyat Islands off southern Oman, and another affecting around 100 km² off Qeshm and Hengam islands in Iran.
The damage to marine ecosystems could be severe due to the presence of coral reefs, tidal flats, and mangrove forests in the affected areas. The oil slicks have been detected using satellite imagery acquired between August 7 and August 10, with the analysis conducted by researchers at the United Nations University Institute for Water, Environment and Health (UNU-INWEH).
The source of the spill is attributed to the damaged bulk carrier Minoan Pioneer near the Strait of Hormuz on August 3, while a larger spill is developing off southern coast of Oman from the tanker Caroline Bezengi, which ran aground after reporting damage. The tanker carried approximately 800,000 barrels of crude oil.
