MBS Visits Egypt as Iran-Backed Forces Escalate Attacks on Saudi Oil Infrastructure
Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman visited Egypt on September 15, amid increased tensions between Saudi Arabia and Iran-backed forces in Yemen.
The trip comes after a series of attacks by Houthi rebels on key oil infrastructure in Saudi Arabia, including the East-West Pipeline, which was forced to shut down due to an attack blamed on drones from Iranian-backed militias in Iraq.
Saudi Arabia has vowed to react 'firmly' to Yemen's Houthis, with Riyadh carrying out around 50 strikes on Houthi targets in response to the attacks. The US is closely monitoring the situation, with Vice-President JD Vance saying that the Trump administration has been engaged in direct conversations with the Houthis themselves.
The visit between Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi is expected to address regional developments and ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation. Egypt has been a key ally of Saudi Arabia, working together on issues such as intervention in Yemen in 2015.
