The sudden recall of McDonald's Korea's popular Chungju Glutinous Corn Cheese Croquette Burger exposed the vulnerabilities in the company's supply chain. The product, which had reached one million sales within two weeks, was pulled from the market after multiple customers reported finding hard, stone-like particles in their burgers. This incident highlights the tension between local sourcing initiatives and strict foreign-object containment in fast-food supply chains.
The problem lies in the decentralized harvesting and processing of regional agricultural inputs, which can introduce non-standardized supply tiers into automated manufacturing loops. The primary exposure vectors occur during the harvesting threshold, sorting inefficiency, and transformation hazard phases. Mechanized harvesting of glutinous corn often takes place in fields with dense particulate matter, soil aggregates, and gravel beds, which can mimic the appearance of raw corn kernels.
The optical sorters and destoners used to process these high-volume commodities can experience calibration drift when handling regional variants or irregular crop yields. This allows sub-centimeter mineral deposits to bypass quality gates, compromising product safety.
