MCX Expands Beyond Commodity Trading Amid Soaring Client Numbers
The Multi Commodity Exchange of India Ltd (MCX) is expanding its business beyond traditional commodity trading, which has caught investors' attention. With a market capitalization of Rs. 85,042 Crores, MCX's shares are trading at around Rs. 3,335 per share, a 10% discount from its 52-week high of Rs. 3,480 per share.
The company has seen an increase in participation, with its trading clients doubling annually to reach 13.72 lakh. This growth is driven by the increasing recognition among investors and hedgers of commodity derivatives.
Option trades have become a significant segment in MCX's operations, with a year-over-year growth of 266%. Despite the decline in volatility impacting premium-driven economics, management highlighted that participation and contract mix were sound. The company's gold option ADV was at approximately 300 MT, while silver options ADV was 9,400 MT.
The addition of 100-gram silver futures could make silver trading more convenient for a larger range of participants. The MCX gold price is currently being used by over 50 AMCs to calculate their AUM. The inclusion of the MCX Coal Exchange of India can also be considered as a potential area of expansion, which aims to facilitate a technology-based system for national coal trade.
