Meta's $9 Billion Data Center to be Powered by New Alberta Gas Plant
A massive new power plant is being built in Alberta to serve Meta's first Canadian data center. The Greenlight Electricity Centre, a combined-cycle facility, will generate 932 megawatts of electricity using natural gas and produce steam for additional power.
The project is estimated to cost $3.24 billion, with Pembina Pipeline, Morgan Stanley Infrastructure Partners, and Kineticor Asset Management owning 47.5% each, and Kineticor holding the remaining 5%. The tolling contract includes capacity and usage-based payments, giving the owners a predictable revenue stream.
The data center will be Meta's first in Canada and its 33rd worldwide, with an investment of over $9.1 billion. It is expected to support about 3,000 construction workers at peak and more than 300 operating jobs. Meta has also pledged to add enough clean energy to Alberta's grid to match 100% of the data center's electricity consumption.
