Methanex Plant Shutdown Reveals Fabricated Gas Crisis in NZ
New Zealand's gas supply crisis has been revealed as a fabrication by government and business leaders. In September 2025, Business NZ Energy Council executive director Tina Schirr warned of a potential gas shortage, while Geoff Smit at DETA predicted the world would end due to declining gas fields.
The energy mining lobby complained about the supposed crisis, and the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) even hyped up a massive LNG port in Taranaki. However, it has now been discovered that the real cause of the scarcity was the Canadian Methanex plant's long-term contractual right to New Zealand's natural gas supply.
The sudden closure of the Methanex plant has made available bounteous volumes of natural gas for New Zealand businesses, rendering the previous crisis claims false. Genesis Energy has even secured all the gas it could possibly need, changing the strategic outlook for its Huntly Power Station.
