Methanex Pulls Plug on Point Lisas Methanol Plant Amid Gas Price Concerns
The Trinidad and Tobago petrochemical sector is facing growing challenges after Methanex announced it will indefinitely idle its Titan methanol plant at Point Lisas from October.
This comes on the heels of Nultrien's controlled shutdown of its Trinidad nitrogen operations in October 2025, citing a lack of reliable and economically priced natural gas that had reduced profitability over an extended period.
Methanex explained that its Titan plant is no longer contributing meaningfully to earnings or free cash flow, suggesting that the country's operations are becoming less important within the global portfolios of multinational companies.
Despite this, the operations remain crucial to Trinidad and Tobago, with Nultrien's four ammonia plants exporting 1 million tonnes of ammonia in 2024, accounting for 31% of the nation's total ammonia exports of 3.23 million tonnes.
