Mexico Targets 25% Natural Gas Demand Jump with New Development Plan
Mexico's Energy Ministry (Sener) has outlined its plans for natural gas development in the country, aiming to increase production to meet a projected 25% rise in domestic demand. According to Sener's 2025-2039 hydrocarbons development plan, industrial and power growth are driving this demand, with power generation reaching 5.9 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d) and industrial gas consumption accelerating.
The plan targets an increase in natural gas production to keep pace with the growing demand. Pemex, Mexico's state-owned energy company, is expected to peak at 2.4 Bcf/d in demand for natural gas. The Centauro del Norte, Cuxtal II, and Lakach projects are among those highlighted as key contributors to meeting this increased demand.
The development plan aims to balance the growth of industrial and power sectors with the need for sustainable energy production. By increasing natural gas production, Mexico hopes to reduce its reliance on imports and promote economic growth while minimizing environmental impact.
