Middle East Bets Big on AI Ambitions
The Middle East is shifting its focus from oil to computing capacity as it aims to become a global AI powerhouse. Gulf governments are investing billions of dollars in building data centers, developing sovereign AI systems, and attracting global technology companies.
Saudi Arabia and the UAE have already made significant progress in this area. Saudi Arabia's HUMAIN project is partnering with Nvidia to create massive AI factories that will produce up to 500 megawatts of power and hundreds of thousands of advanced GPUs over five years.
The region has several advantages, including enormous sovereign wealth, relatively cheap energy, large areas for infrastructure, and governments capable of making huge investments quickly. However, there is a risk that these countries may become too dependent on foreign companies for advanced technologies, which could limit their ability to create a truly independent AI ecosystem.
