Middle East Conflict Drives Oil Prices Higher Amid Stagflation Fears

The ongoing conflict in the Middle East has led to elevated oil prices and record diesel prices in the US, prompting concerns about stagflation. The Iran-US tussle has entered its 192nd day, with Energy Secretary Chris Wright suggesting that if Iran attempts to rebuild its nuclear capabilities, the US may simply have to destroy them again.

The conflict, combined with Ukrainian attacks on Russian refineries, has driven up oil prices globally. U.S. consumers are seeing record diesel prices, with truckers paying an average of $5.85 a gallon nationwide, a nearly 60% increase over last year's price.

In response to the rising energy costs and inflation, President Donald Trump has urged the Federal Reserve not to raise interest rates and in some cases to cut them. The president's senior economic counselor, Peter Navarro, warned that a rate hike would be 'careless' and 'would hit precisely the sectors America needs to prosper most.'

Markets are pricing in a 60% probability of a Fed rate hike for the September meeting, but the administration's pressure campaign has raised questions about its impact on Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh. The Wall Street Journal reported that Trump talked to Warsh repeatedly, although the president denied it.
