Middle East Conflict Drives Oil Prices to $100, Putting Europe's Economies at Risk

The Middle East conflict has escalated, causing oil prices to surge past $100 per barrel and natural gas to reach its highest price in two and a half years. This increase is putting pressure on European economies, particularly Germany's, which relies heavily on energy imports.

European Brent prices are now expected to be significantly higher than the ECB's previous forecast of $97 by year-end, with gas prices reaching as high as 64 euros per megawatt-hour.

The situation is being closely monitored by the European Central Bank (ECB), which has warned that energy prices will remain high until at least mid-2027. The ECB's president, Christine Lagarde, stated that the geopolitical situation remains fragile and could have a greater and more prolonged impact on energy prices.

Germans are particularly concerned about their country's dependence on energy imports, with some analysts predicting that electricity prices will be a key indicator of inflationary pressures in the Eurozone. The conflict is also affecting global markets, with the fear index surging over 20% and the VIX of the US stock market reaching its highest level since June.

Meanwhile, the debt market is also coming under scrutiny, with the US ten-year bond yield rising to 4.7%, a level not seen since January 2025. The French government has acknowledged that the situation is 'serious' and 'worrisome', with France's public deficit reaching 5.1%.
