Middle East Conflict Drives Up Australian Fuel Prices

Australian fuel prices are expected to rise further due to the escalating conflict in the Middle East. The situation has pushed oil prices above US$100 a barrel, causing already high fuel prices in Australia to increase.

The latest escalation of conflict involves drones launched from Iraq forcing the temporary closure of a crucial oil export route used to bypass the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. This, combined with the Iran-aligned Houthis' control over the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, has put pressure on global fuel supplies.

Australia's Energy Minister Chris Bowen sought to reassure Australians about the country's fuel supplies, citing strategic reserves equivalent to 41 days of petrol consumption and 42 days of diesel consumption. However, he warned that 'the situation in the Middle East is deteriorating' and 'invariably that will flow through to Australia'.

The average price of regular unleaded petrol in Australia has risen to $2.11 a litre, up from $1.55 in July when the fuel excise discount was still in effect. Diesel prices have increased by almost 50% since June, prompting concerns about inflation and potential interest rate hikes.
