Middle East Conflict Raises Concerns Over Global Energy Security
The Middle East conflict is affecting energy supplies and creating uncertainty about the market outlook, according to International Energy Agency's Executive Director Fatih Birol. The renewed escalation of hostilities around key shipping routes has increased concerns over global energy security.
The Houthi rebels in Yemen have threatened to attack vessels using Saudi ports, disturbing the traffic of tankers carrying Saudi crude in the Red Sea. This has raised concerns about shipping through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, which is becoming increasingly important as a route to bypass the Strait of Hormuz.
However, several factors are cushioning crude oil markets from the impact of disruptions. Substantial volumes from producers in the Persian Gulf region are reaching global markets via alternative routes, largely thanks to major efforts by Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Some volumes are still passing through the Strait of Hormuz.
