Middle East Conflict Sparks Global Food Crisis Fears

The ongoing conflict in the Middle East and transportation disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz have created significant risks for global raw material markets.

Before the conflict, the Middle East supplied substantial volumes of various commodities to the world market. The region has a considerable share in global production and supply of products such as aluminum, urea, anhydrous ammonia, cement, technical sulfur, and phosphate.

A prolonged blockade in the Strait of Hormuz could lead to transportation problems for these products, resulting in further price increases worldwide.

The Invesco DB Agriculture Fund (DBA), which tracks agricultural products, has risen by over 11% in the last six months. The Invesco DB Base Metals Fund (DBB), covering industrial metals, has increased by approximately 9.4% during this time.

The biggest risk lies in the food market. A prolonged conflict could lead to higher fertilizer and energy prices, logistics difficulties, and consequently, increased prices for wheat, corn, meat, vegetables, and other food products.
