Middle East Conflict Sparks LNG Price Spike in Asia
The ongoing conflict in the Middle East has severely impacted the supply of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to developing Asian nations, resulting in a significant increase in costs.
According to a Bloomberg News analysis, these countries have spent a collective US$7.4 billion on spot LNG since the start of the war, which is more than double the amount they spent under long-term contracts over the same period last year.
The loss of Qatari shipments through the Strait of Hormuz has forced Asian buyers to turn to the spot market, where prices are surging. This has raised concerns about the reliability of LNG as a fuel source and its long-term future in the region.
