Middle East Maritime Routes See Significant Slowdown Amid Security Concerns
The global energy trade is facing significant disruptions due to ongoing maritime security concerns in key Middle East waterways. Commercial shipping through critical routes such as the Bab al-Mandeb Strait and the Strait of Hormuz has slowed down, with a notable decline in vessel traffic over the weekend.
Kpler's ship-tracking data revealed that only 18 ships transited through the Bab al-Mandeb Strait on Sunday, compared to 27 on Saturday. Similarly, transit through the Strait of Hormuz declined from 19 vessels on Friday to just 10 on Saturday. The Bab al-Mandeb Strait saw a significant drop in vessel traffic, with two Saudi crude oil tankers managing to pass through early this week.
The slowdown in shipping activity is attributed to new security incidents, military enforcement measures, and heightened regional tensions. This has raised concerns over global energy supplies and trade. The US military has redirected 35 commercial vessels as part of maritime enforcement measures targeting Iran.
