Middle East Oil Crisis Intensifies with Brent Crude Surpassing $100
The global oil market is experiencing significant turmoil following recent events in the Middle East. Tensions escalated after Iran launched strikes on US military targets, prompting a response from the US military. The Houthis, backed by Iran, have also attacked oil tankers in the Red Sea, raising concerns about crude supplies.
As a result, the price of Brent crude surged past $100 per barrel for the first time since May 2026, representing an increase of 8%. This price jump has sparked alarm among world leaders, with some warning of potential energy shocks and inflationary pressures.
The situation is further complicated by the involvement of various regional actors, including Yemen's Houthis and Saudi Arabia. US allies Jordan and Kuwait have also been targeted in attacks attributed to Iran's military.
Despite efforts to de-escalate tensions, world leaders are warning about the potential consequences of continued conflict. European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde has cautioned that energy shocks could intensify further, pushing up inflation and prompting speculation about interest rate hikes.
