The Middle East diplomatic efforts have hit a snag as a regional meeting between Iran and other Persian Gulf powers was postponed on Monday. Oil prices surged after markets reopened on Monday, following developments that threaten supplies from the world's largest exporter, Saudi Arabia. The kingdom kept its 1,200km east-west pipeline closed throughout the weekend after it was damaged in drone strikes on Friday.
Hopes for a diplomatic breakthrough in the near term have faded with the postponement of the meeting, which was scheduled to take place on Monday. Iranian officials had said they would attend the gathering to present an agreement with Oman on governing shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuz.
