Middle East Tensions Send European Gas Prices Soaring
European natural gas prices have hit their highest level in three years due to renewed tensions in the Middle East. The front-month Dutch TTF gas contract rose by 4.4% on Monday, trading at €69.90 per megawatt-hour (MWh) as of 11:34 a.m. local time.
The price increase is driven by concerns about potential disruptions to liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports from the Persian Gulf. Low storage levels in Europe and tight global LNG supplies are also contributing to the upward pressure on prices.
Analysts warn that a prolonged disruption to LNG exports from the Gulf could force European buyers to compete more aggressively with Asian buyers for available cargoes, potentially driving European natural gas prices even higher.
