Middle East Tensions Send European Gas Prices Soaring

European natural gas prices have reached their highest level since January 2023 due to concerns over Middle East supply disruptions. The front-month Dutch TTF gas contract rose by 4.4% to €69.90 per megawatt-hour (MWh) at 11.34 a.m. local time (0834 GMT).

The rise in prices is attributed to geopolitical tensions, which have raised concerns over liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports from the Persian Gulf. EU gas storage facilities are only 64.7% full, leaving inventories below historical levels for this time of year.

Analysts warn that a prolonged disruption to Gulf LNG exports could force European buyers to compete more aggressively with Asian buyers for available cargoes, potentially putting further upward pressure on European gas prices.
