Middle East Tensions Send Oil Prices Soaring
Oil prices skyrocketed by over 6% yesterday in response to escalating tensions in the Middle East. The rise came as hostilities between Iran and US-backed forces, as well as the advance of Iran-backed Houthi forces in Yemen towards the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, heightened concerns about global energy flows.
The price of WTI crude oil surpassed $102 per barrel, while Brent reached $107. Markets reacted to reciprocal attacks by the United States and Iran on ships in the Persian Gulf, as well as statements from US President Donald Trump that gave investors little reason to expect a swift end to the confrontation.
The advance of Houthi forces brings them closer to the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, through which more than 10% of global cargo traffic passes. This increase in oil prices is intensifying concerns about further acceleration in inflation in the United States, where the Producer Price Index rose by 5.4%, exceeding analysts' expectations.
