Middle East Tensions Send Oil Prices Soaring Above $90
Oil prices have surged to over $90 per barrel as tensions in the Middle East continue to escalate, heightening concerns about potential disruptions to global crude supply.
The recent rally in West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude has been driven primarily by supply security concerns, rather than demand expectations. Escalating Middle East tensions and Red Sea shipping disruptions have collectively lifted the crude risk premium, driving prices back toward the $91.50 level.
Investors are reassessing energy security due to regional risks intensifying, leading to a rapid increase in the risk premium embedded in crude markets. The Strait of Hormuz has become an increasingly important alternative transportation route amid rising risks to shipments through this key Middle Eastern shipping channel.
While rerouting shipments via the Suez Canal or circumnavigating Africa may alleviate some supply pressures, it also increases shipping time and costs, providing additional support to international oil prices.
