Middle East Tensions Send Oil Prices Soaring Above $90 per Barrel
Oil prices surged above $90 per barrel on Wednesday as tensions in the Middle East escalated and supply fears mounted. Brent crude rose to $90.39 per barrel, according to Oilprice.com.
The increase follows a series of military developments involving the United States, Saudi Arabia, and Iran. The US and Saudi Arabia launched strikes on Iranian-backed groups in Iraq, blaming them for drone attacks on Saudi oil facilities.
Iran responded by firing missiles at American troops in the region and targeting ships in the Strait of Hormuz. The Strait is one of the world's most critical energy transit routes, and concerns over supply disruptions have driven up prices.
UBS analyst Giovanni Staunovo commented on the market reaction: 'Renewed military strikes in the Middle East and Iranian officials reiterating that they want to control shipping activity through the Strait of Hormuz amid depressed oil flows through the Strait are lifting oil prices again.'
