Middle East Tensions Send Oil Prices Soaring Over $10 Per Barrel
Oil prices have surged over $10 per barrel as tensions in the Middle East continue to rise. The Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for global oil shipments, was nearly fully blocked due to Yemen's Houthi militants' attacks on vessels in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. Kazakhstan suspended crude shipments through the Caspian Pipeline Consortium network after Ukrainian drone strikes.
Brent crude prices stood at $100.30 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate rose to $91.70 per barrel, each climbing more than $10 per barrel from the start of the week. Analysts warn that the heightened tensions and worries about an expanding conflict are endangering a large volume of oil supply.
ING commodity analysts noted that the market will likely follow the path of least resistance for now, implying oil prices will continue to rise unless there are indications that the U.S. or Iran, or both, are ready to initiate peace discussions.
