Middle East Tensions Send Oil Prices Upward Amid Ongoing Uncertainty
Oil prices rose slightly in early Asian trading on Monday as traders weighed renewed Israeli attacks on Lebanon and the prospect of fresh US sanctions on Iran. The global benchmark Brent crude increased by 0.5% in value, while the dollar remained largely unchanged against major peers.
The surge in oil prices comes after Israel confirmed that it had killed 11 people, including a senior Hezbollah commander, in strikes on southern Lebanon over the weekend. This escalation of violence may further complicate already deadlocked negotiations between Washington and Tehran, which are set to reach the formal end of their ceasefire agreement on Monday.
According to Kyle Rodda, a senior analyst at Capital.com, 'geopolitical uncertainty remains the most significant headwind for the market currently'. The conflict in the Middle East continues to weigh on market sentiment, although the relative lack of military activity has lowered volatility marginally.
