Middle East Tensions Send US Jet Fuel Costs Soaring
Escalating tensions in the Middle East have caused US jet fuel costs to surge. A temporary agreement between the US and Iran has collapsed, pushing Brent crude oil prices above $100 per barrel. According to Detik Finance, refining margins have increased alongside record-high US fuel exports due to supply restrictions at the Strait of Hormuz.
The ongoing shortage is affecting major US carriers, including Southwest Airlines. The company's chief financial officer, Tom Doxey, said that a charter to transport 12.6 million gallons of jet fuel from Houston to Los Angeles via the Panama Canal in late May helped mitigate localized shortages on the West Coast.
The emergency shipment was made possible by a temporary Jones Act waiver granted by the Trump Administration. However, the collapse of the ceasefire has led to rapid price increases across crude and refined products.
