Middle East Tensions Spark European Gas Price Surge

European natural gas prices have reached their highest level since early 2023 due to renewed tensions in the Middle East. The price of October gas futures at the Dutch TTF hub increased by 4.4% to €69.9 per megawatt-hour, marking a new high since January 2023.

Gas storage facilities across Europe are currently 64.7% full, which is below the historical average for this time of year. Analysts attribute the latest price increase to concerns that the conflict in the Middle East could disrupt LNG exports from the Gulf region.

There are also growing concerns about Europe's gas reserves ahead of winter, as storage levels remain below the seasonal average. The milder weather expected across Europe in early September may help keep gas demand in check, but relatively low storage levels and uncertainty over LNG supplies from the Gulf continue to push prices higher.
