Middle East Tensions Spark European Gas Price Surge
European natural gas futures prices have reached their highest level since late 2022, driven by renewed tensions in the Middle East and concerns over energy supplies.
The Dutch TTF Natural Gas Futures, a benchmark for European gas, exceeded 84 euros per megawatt-hour on Monday, its highest level since late 2022.
Investors are worried that ongoing tensions in the Middle East could trigger prolonged disruptions to liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplies from the region. The International Energy Agency (IEA) has warned of extreme price volatility and significant economic impacts due to competition for limited LNG cargoes during periods of acute stress.
Industry insiders also warn that factors such as lower-than-expected winter temperatures and insufficient electricity supply generated by renewable energy will put more pressure on Europe's energy market.
