Middle East Tensions Spark Oil Price Surge
Crude oil prices have surged due to escalating military tensions in the Middle East. The conflict has led to a significant reduction in oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, which handles around 20 million barrels per day.
The price of Brent oil has jumped above $91 per barrel, while WTI oil is trading at around $86 per barrel. Analysts attribute this increase to geopolitical risk, with the Bloomberg Economics price impact model showing a negative demand impact and stabilized supply factors.
One key factor driving the price surge is the physical availability of oil in the Strait of Hormuz. The direct exchange of missile strikes between US and Iranian forces has led to a sharp reduction in oil shipments, with levels dropping as low as 6-8 million barrels per day.
