Middle East Tensions Spark Oil Price Surge Amid US Equity Sell-Off
The escalation of tensions in the Middle East led to a surge in international oil prices on August 17, 2026. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell by 272.63 points to close at 53,459.78, while the S&P 500 dropped 40.70 points to 7,745.06. The Nasdaq Composite slid 84.25 points to 26,644.91.
The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index bucked this trend, however, surging 203.96 points or 1.64% to close at 12,621.01. This was the only gainer among the four major indices on Monday.
Market concerns over potential disruptions to Middle East oil supply and rising energy costs drove up international crude prices, reigniting fears of inflation. Treasury yields also climbed under selling pressure, putting a downward squeeze on equities.
