Middle East Tensions Spark Oil Price Surge to Over 6%
The price of oil has surged by over 6% after a series of tanker attacks in the Middle East. Brent crude futures rose to $107.63 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate (WTI) climbed to $102.48 per barrel, marking the first time since May that WTI has broken above the $100 per barrel level.
The attacks have heightened geopolitical risks and concerns over supply disruptions in the region. The Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a major maritime route connecting the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden, is under increased scrutiny due to clashes between Yemen's Houthi movement and Saudi-backed forces.
Market analysts warn that any threats to vessels could force shipping companies to reroute, increase insurance costs, and delay the transportation of crude oil and refined products. This would push up the geopolitical premium embedded in crude oil prices.
