Middle East Tensions Spark Surge in Crude Oil Prices Amid Strait of Hormuz Disruptions
Crude oil prices have surged today due to rising tensions in the Middle East. The lack of an agreement between Iran and Oman to reopen the Strait of Hormuz has limited crude supplies from the region, pushing oil prices higher.
The Houthi militants in Yemen claimed an attack on Saudi Arabia's Jazan refinery over the weekend, further straining global fuel supplies. President Trump signaled he's prepared to let economic pressure on Iran build rather than launch additional military strikes, saying the US was only 'semi-negotiating' with Iran on the Strait of Hormuz.
Russian crude exports have also increased, adding to global oil supplies and putting downward pressure on prices. However, OPEC delegates have approved a +188,000 bpd increase in crude production for September, which could prove difficult to achieve amid renewed US-Iran military tensions.
