Middle East Tensions Weigh on Wall Street as Energy Sector Rises
Wall Street took a hit on Tuesday as investors grew uneasy over escalating tensions in the Middle East. Shares of tech giants Amazon and Alphabet plummeted, driven by concerns that Iran's Supreme National Security Council would maintain its blockade of the Strait of Hormuz unless the US changes its stance.
The energy sector, however, saw some relief with oil prices nearing one-week highs. This led to a 1.1% rise in the S&P 500 energy sector index.
Ross Mayfield from Baird noted that market participants are anticipating higher oil pricing, adding to the uncertainty surrounding ongoing geopolitical conflicts.
In contrast to the tech sector's struggles, alternative asset managers such as Apollo Global and Blackstone saw significant gains. This divergence reflects the resilience of the broader market, fueled by robust earnings and strategic financial partnerships.
