Mideast Tensions Spark European Gas Price Surge
The ongoing tensions in the Middle East have pushed European natural gas prices to a new high since 2023, according to recent market data. The Dutch Title Transfer Facility (TTF) benchmark for European gas prices reached over 75 euros per megawatt-hour during Wednesday's trading.
This price has more than doubled from the approximately 32-euro level seen before the outbreak of the U.S.-Israeli war with Iran in late February, highlighting the significant impact of regional conflicts on global energy markets.
The EU natural gas reserves stood at only 63 percent in the last week of August, far below the average of about 80 percent for the same period in recent years. Analysts believe that if tensions in the Middle East persist, energy price volatility will intensify further.
