Midwest CO2 Supply Under Pressure from CCS Projects
Carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) projects in the US Midwest could put pressure on the regional CO2 supply, according to Bruce Woerner, a CO2 consultant. Ethanol producers are developing CCS projects that remove existing sources of CO2 from the merchant market.
The Red Trail Energy ethanol plant in North Dakota is an example of this trend, capturing CO2 produced during corn fermentation and storing it underground.
Woerner warns that as more CCS projects come online, existing CO2 suppliers may struggle to meet demand. This could have significant implications for industries reliant on CO2, such as food and beverage production.
