Midwest Crops Advance Despite Disease and Weather Challenges

The Midwest crops are advancing despite disease and weather challenges. In Iowa, corn has reached its maximum height and ear length, but some areas may experience tip kernel abortion due to dry conditions. Southern rust has been confirmed in four counties, but at very low levels.

In Ohio, the hot weather has accelerated crop growth, with over 55% of soybeans flowering and about 20% setting pods. However, tar spot has not yet been detected. Winter wheat is almost complete, and corn is rated good to excellent at 72%, with more than half now silking.

In Illinois, the rain has caused uneven crop growth, with some areas looking 'pretty ugly' due to replanting issues. Double-crop soybeans are expected to start harvesting in late August or early September. Michigan's corn crop is outpacing national averages, with 72% rated good to excellent.

Despite the challenges, farmers are adapting and finding ways to mitigate the effects of disease and weather conditions.
