Minnesota Farmers Battle High Fuel Costs and Drought in Fall Harvest

Farmers in Minnesota and the Upper Midwest are facing significant challenges this fall harvest season due to high fuel costs and dry conditions.

The University of Minnesota Extension Educator Dave Nicolai notes that diesel fuel prices are a major concern, with growers who bought supplies ahead of time likely paying lower prices months ago.

Nicolai expects prolonged dry conditions to be top of mind going into the winter and next spring, exacerbating the impact of high diesel prices on farms and transportation sectors.

The region has experienced a hot and dry summer with minimal rainfall, with Nicolai stating that rain this week will have little effect on yields for corn and beans that are already matured.
