Mississippi River Corn Exports Reach All-Time High
US corn exports from Mississippi River terminals surged to an all-time high of 1.1 million tonnes in the week ended August 13, according to the US Department of Agriculture's Grain Transportation Report (GTR). This represents a 176% increase from the prior three-year average.
The report noted that this was the third-highest weekly corn export total from the Mississippi River this year, and coincided with above-average corn volumes on the river system. An average of 494,000 short tons of corn moved down the river over the past four weeks, a 19% increase from last year and 53% higher than the three-year average.
Other export regions also showed strength in corn exports, with Pacific Northwest inspections totaling 400,000 tonnes - nearly double the prior three-year average. Interior export inspections, mostly railed to Mexico, reached 300,000 tonnes, up 26% from average.
