Mixed Asian Markets Amid AI Concerns and Rising Oil Prices
Asian shares were trading mixed on Tuesday as investors remained cautious about the performance of artificial-intelligence (AI) stocks. Japan's benchmark Nikkei 225 surged 0.8% in morning trading to 63,993.22.
The gains for Softbank Group, a major investor in OpenAI, led the way, jumping more than 8% after CEO Sam Altman said that OpenAI would likely wait until next year for a sale of its stock on Wall Street. This delay could impact the potential influx of cash for Softbank and other early investors.
However, AI stocks as a whole were under pressure due to concerns over their high prices and the safety risks associated with rapid development. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei's call for a deliberate slowdown in AI development has added to these worries.
In contrast, gains outside of AI helped limit losses on Wall Street, where the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 0.3% and the Nasdaq composite sank 0.6%. Oil prices continued their upward trend, rising 1.36% to $102.77 a barrel as tensions in the Middle East continue to impact global crude supplies.
