Mixed Gold, Silver Prices Amid US Tariff Uncertainty
Global gold and silver prices ended Monday in a mixed state, with gold futures rising by 0.15% to settle at $4,077.00 per ounce on the New York Mercantile Exchange, while silver futures fell by 0.33% to close at $58.712 per ounce.
The recent introduction of new tariffs by the U.S. government has sparked criticism from economists and politicians worldwide, who warn that these measures will disrupt global supply chains, undermine free trade, and weigh heavily on the global economy.
According to Veljko Mijuskovic, a professor at the Faculty of Economics in Serbia, the core motive behind the U.S. tariff policy is to clamp down on its key competitors. He emphasized that these tariffs will batter global supply chains and impede free trade, ultimately hurting the interests of all stakeholders, including the United States.
Echoing concerns, Patrick Bond, a political economist at the University of Johannesburg in South Africa, noted that the disregard for international trade rules by the U.S. has exposed the global economy to greater volatility and uncertainty.
